Ensemble Schönbrunn has built an admirable reputation with over 25 years of concerts and CD recordings of chamber music selected by its artistic leader and founding member Marten Root who re-discovered unknown repertoire, ranging from Frescobaldi to Debussy. The ultimate testimony is their CD series 'Out of the shadow of the masters' which appeared on Globe Records and which includes compositions of contemporaries of Mozart and Beethoven, such as Friedrich Hartmann Graf, Anton Reicha, Ferdinand Ries and Johann Martin Nisle.
Ensemble Schönbrunn also distinguishes itself by presenting well -known masterpieces from the chamber music repertoire in an innovative way. They specially developed a 'nocturnal event' for the Early Music Festival in Utrecht a performance in which compositions of Debussy were played on historical 19th century instruments, combined with a modern reconstruction of the lost Tableaux Vivants done in cooperation with photographer Marco Borggreve and visual artist Daan Noppen (August 2007). The most recent examples (April 2010) are their concerts with Bach's Musical Offering, performed on (a copy of) the earliest fortepiano, as had been used by Frederic the Great in 1747 at the court of Potsdam.
The size and the combination of instruments of the ensemble varies, depending on the repertoire, from trio to nonet. For the concerts and recording of Mozart's Concertos for flute the ensemble performs as a chamber orchestra without conductor as was often the case in the 18th century.

Ensemble Schönbrunn heeft in de meer dan 25 jaar van zijn bestaan een grote reputatie opgebouwd met het spelen en op cd vastleggen van door artistiek leider Marten Root hervonden onbekend repertoire, reikend van Frescobaldi tot Debussy. Hiervan getuigt ook de cd-serie Out of the shadow of the masters (verschenen op Globe Records), met werken van tijdgenoten van Mozart en Beethoven, zoals Friedrich Hartmann Graf, Anton Reicha, Ferdinand Ries en Johann Martin Nisle.
Verder onderscheidt het ensemble zich door het op een vernieuwende manier presenteren van bekende meesterwerken. Zoals in de speciaal voor het Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht ontwikkelde voorstelling waarin werken van Debussy werden uitgevoerd op historische instrumenten, tezamen met een moderne reconstructie van de ontbrekende Tableaux Vivants , in samenwerking met fotograaf Marco Borggreve en visueel kunstenaar Daan Noppen (augustus 2007). Het meest recente voorbeeld (april 2010) zijn de concerten met Bachs Musikalisches Opfer, waarin gespeeld werd op (een kopie van) de allervroegste fortepiano, zoals gebruikt ten tijde van het ontstaan van dit werk aan het hof in Potsdam.
De grootte van het ensemble varieert, afhankelijk van het repertoire, van trio tot nonet. Speciaal voor de uitvoering en opname van Mozarts fluitconcerten treedt het ensemble zelfs op als klein en ongedirigeerd kamerorkest.

Three highlights from Bach's oeuvre and one new composition by Theo Verbey. Special features of this programme are the low pitch (a 392 Hz) and the exceptionally small formation: flute harpsichord single strings and just a basse de violon as Bach himself suggested.

Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe recording new CD
Bach Sonata in
b-minor
In 1991, in the vicinity of Nürnberg, a flute was found made by the famous 18th century
wind-instrument maker Jacob Denner.
This instrument from the time of Bach was used together with the Zell harpsichord from the Museum collection in Hamburg for the recording of Bach's Sonata in b-minor.
This phenomenal flute has been a source of inspiration and I would very much like to thank Peter Spohr for the opportunity to use it.
